Spring Farm Gate Guide

This season you can get an arm full of peonies and the first of the pick-your-own strawberries from the Coal Valley. There’s home-grown asparagus, free range eggs and new season potatoes as well. We’re spoilt in spring!

Here you can find a spring favourite, Globe Artichokes, as well as honey, preserves and other seasonal veg throughout the summer months. Farm gate open Wed – Sat, 10am – 4pm, also at Coal Valley Farmer’s Market.

Asparagus, such a spring favourite! Tasmanian Kitchen Pantry often delivers their abundance of asparagus to the community table at Richmond Village Market, and can be found at the Bream Creek Market .

It’s the beginning of pick-your-own strawberry season, a real favourite here! Be sure to check Littlewood’s Facebook updates for open times, as they vary in spring while the season gets underway.

Keep an eye out for the The Spud Shed sign on Fingerpost Road, it lists the produce currently available. At the moment it says ‘Strawberries’. Hoorah!

Autumn’s apple harvest is still available, along with a variety of other new seasons things as they are picked. Watch out for the ever-changing sign on the main road between Cambridge and Richmond.

Tim and Candice, the cheese makers at Coal River Farm make incredible hard and soft cheeses right there next to the cafe.  You can also find handmade chocolates at the cafe, and pick-your-own fruit during summer.

On the main road between Richmond from Cambridge you can find Wicked Cheese Co. You can have a tasting while looking into the cheese factory! They also have a cafe and a provedore full of local products.

The Long family are passionate bee advocates and educators, and harvest delicious honey. You can taste-test leatherwood, wildflower and clover honey at the farm gate.

Farmer Fi tends to a boutique olive grove just outside of Richmond Village. Fi makes table olives and presses oil at her farm, try her lemon oil if you get a chance, incredible. (She is also our seasonal recipe contributor!)

At the mouth of the Coal River in the tidal waters is Barilla Bay Oyster Farm. You can stop in to the cafe for your Tassie seafood fix, or grab some freshly shucked oysters in an insulated pack on your way to the airport, for a taste of Tasmania at home.

Every Saturday from 9am – 3pm you can get your fill of fresh veg… and don’t forget to have a peek at the community table, there’s often a load of home-grown veg from local gardeners up for grabs.

As well as whole walnuts, Coaldale also offer walnut kernels that they have shelled onsite. They make tasty pickled walnuts, which are great with a cheese platter, they also make a great gift if you can bear to part with them!
